With Emory’s laundry list of allergies, it’s been really difficult for us to find a dairy-free milk alternative that is safe for her to consume. We’ve tried every dairy-free milk that is available on the retail market.  Rice milk happened to be her favorite.

Unfortunately,  Due to Emory’s sunflower allergy, we have not been able to find a brand of rice milk that she does not react to.   Instead of depriving her, yet again, of something that she cannot have I decided to make some. Come to find out it was super easy and Emory absolutely loves this homemade rice milk recipe.

 

How do you make rice milk?

I was amazed at how easing making homemade rice milk was. You simply cook the rice according to the package and blend it with water, vanilla, and date syrup until smooth.

Is homemade rice milk healthy?

The short answer is it’s not unhealthy. When compared to cow’s milk it does not have the same amount of vitamin D, vitamin C, calcium, etc. At this point in our allergy journey, it’s about enjoyment. We do our best to provide Emory with the proper nutrients through food and vitamins.

Which rice is best for homemade rice milk?

You can make this homemade rice milk with any kind of rice. Basmati rice however is the best choice as it contains less arsenic than other kinds.

How long does homemade rice milk last?

Store the milk for 4-5 days in the fridge. Shake well before consuming.

Can rice milk be used to make dairy-free ice cream?

Absolutely!! That’s what we are most looking forward to this summer. My previous no-churn ice cream recipes no-churn ice cream recipes contain coconut milk. We’ve since learned that Emory has a coconut allergy. We will be remaking these recipes using this dairy-free milk.

Can rice milk be used when baking?

Yes! We recently used our rice milk in our cupcakes. They were awesome.

  • 1 blender

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups Cooked rice
  • 4 cups water
  • 3 tbsp date syrup
  • 2 t tsp vanilla extract

Instructions
 

  • Cook rice according to package.
  • add cooked rice, water, sweetness, and extract to blender.
  • blend until smooth.
  • strain mixture using cheese cloth until all rice bits have been removed.
  • pour milk into glass container with lid and store in the refrigerator.
