SNOOZE, an A.M. Eatery for the Picky & Indecisive

Snooze Pancakes

Founded by brothers Jon and Adam Schlegel, Snooze was born on April 2, 2006 in Denver, Colorado seeking to evolve the A.M. dining experience through culinary innovation, an eclectic and energetic atmosphere and comfortable and friendly service.

A few bloggers were invited to the “soft opening” of Houston’s newest all day breakfast/brunch spot,  SNOOZE, an A.M. Eatery. The menu is stacked solid with all of your favorite morning (or afternoon) classics.

I have fond memories of my mother making breakfast for dinner when I was little. I thought I was “special” because who else was eating fluffy pancakes drenched in brer rabbit syrup before bed?! No one. As I got older I realized that i’m not special and she was only doing this because it was quick, comforting and made everyone in the house happy.

Those same words describe Snooze’s offerings of classic breakfast/brunch options and cocktails. I roll with a “picky” bunch of foodies, and Snooze was able to meet all of our needs. For example, my best friend doesn’t eat eggs, and my other friend doesn’t like her food to touch.

After glancing at the menu, it was decided that the Pancake “Flights” , French Toast and Benny Duo were perfect options for these fussy foodies!

“Morning Grub”

Snooze’s “sweet utopia” menu is where you’ll find items like pancake flights and french toast. They offer unique pancakes like Pineapple Upside Down, Peach Pie, Sweet Potato and Blueberry Danish pancakes. My BFF ordered the pancake flights, but she’s a total “snooze” and ordered three of the same pancakes. Who does that? She’s NO FUN AT ALL, lol. Her Blueberry Danish pancakes were legit though, I could have eaten all three. They were fluffy and flavorful. Although the syrup wasn’t brer rabbit, it was still yummy.

The Drunk’n Monkey French Toast, though I didn’t try it, looked perfect. Two griddled slices of custard dipped banana bread topped with rum toffee sauce, toasted walnuts, whipped mascarpone cream and a bruleed banana.

Snooze’s menu has a lot of options to choose from. I tend to be very indecisive when given too many choices. I am typically a “let me get one of each” chick! Luckily for me, while reading Snooze’s “the art of hollandaise” section, I came across the following little note “Benny Duo Can’t decide?! Choose half an order of your two favorite Benedict offerings.”  Finally a restaurant that gets me.

I ordered the Benny Duo and selected half of the Caprese Benedict* and half of the Chilaquiles Benedict. I was presented with a hearty plate of poached (cage-free) eggs, slathered in various hollandaise sauces, summer ripe heirloom tomatoes, flavorful barbacoa beef and various cheeses. One of the best choices on the menu, I highly recommend it!

“ahhh la carte”

The “ahhh la carte” section of the menu is where you can order your meats (“faux” meats available for the vegetarians), tacos, toast and of course hash browns. Snooze has “fancy” hash browns.

Totally not your flat, mashed and flavorless “Waffle House” hash browns. Snooze’s “browns” had some flavor to them, but I don’t know that I loved them. Which is weird because I feel like so much more time and love went into making them. I give them a 3 out of 5, but please believe me when I say that your meal will be just as delicious with or without them.

“Morning Cocktails”

Snooze also offers “morning cocktails” to jump start your day. There are three sections: Bubbles, Bloody’s and Booze where you will find your mimosa’s, bloody mary’s and boozy cocktails. If you want a little “fire in your chest,” order the Spicy Bloody. A spicy concoction of Snooze House Bloody Mix & Jalapeno Infused Vodka.

Oddly, the same person who ordered the three blueberry pancakes ordered the most “adventurous” drink on the menu. The “Orange Snoozius” is a drink I would never order.  I don’t like ANYTHING orange or that contains the word orange.

Orange Snoozius is made with Dripping Springs Vodka, Orange Liqueur, Fresh Orange juice & Whipped Cream. I didn’t even want to look at it after I read what was in it. The cocktails was rated as “enjoyable.”
