Do you love Indian food? Have a particular place in Houston, that tickles your fancy? Govinda’s, which translates to “The One Who Brings Pleasure” is my new favorite place for quality vegan and vegetarian Indian Cuisine in the Heights. Read all about my delicious experience.
Govinda’s is located at 1320 W 34th Street. Maybe you’ve driven down W. 34th and seen what looks like a temple? It’s in there. Govinda’s is adjacent to the Hare Krishna Temple & Cultural Center. You will easily pass this restaurant if you’re unfamiliar with that tip.
At Govinda’s the menu is simple and straight forward. Due in part to buffet service being your only option. The restaurant is open every day for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and dinner from 5-9 p.m. The buffet is approximately 40 percent vegan Monday through Saturday and purely vegan on Sunday.
I visited for their Love Feast which occurred earlier this month. Of course, it rained and completely washed out other aspects of the event. But not for the Restaurant. As a result of the torrential rains the dinning room was packed. A line of Hungry Houstonians patiently waited their turn for a trip down Govinda’s electric buffet line.
FOOD
Govinda’s signature dishes are all true stand outs. I highly recommended the Saag Paneer, Vegetable Korma, Vegetable Kofta and the Chana Masala. A fan of Saag Paneer? Govinda’s has the BEST in Houston, yea, I said it! Creamy, perfectly seasoned sauteed spinach and cheese. Oh, can’t forget about the Samosa. Flavorful, stout and satisfying.
Though I’m not a huge fan of Indian sweets, I finished my meal with a Mango Lassi, duh! My husband raved about the Ginger/Mint Lemonade. Guess that mean’s I will have to go back.. darn.
