The Galleria area just got better with the January opening of H.S. Green, a fresh, fast and casual eatery on Richmond. I can’t believe it took me this long to make my way over there but now that I have experienced a little bit of heaven, I must have more! Being quite the fan of places like Snap Kitchen and True food Kitchen  I wasn’t sure how I would feel about another “healthy” restaurant encroaching upon their territory. My most recent visit confirmed that H.S. Green beats them both with their “Build Your Own” salad bar, cold press juices and fresh fruit smoothies.

PRESSED JUICES

I know what your thinking, Snap Kitchen has all three of those options, right? Essentially yes, but H.S. Green must have done some market research before hand, because their smoothies and juices come in $1.04 cheaper. That might not be much, but a dollar goes a long way in my world. Our juices were delicious. The Watermelon, Lime and Mint was 5-stars and Pear, Cucumber and Ginger was on point!

Additionally, their salad bar has a more options and offers proteins like crispy duck, grilled salmon and shrimp, edamame quinoa falafels, roasted tofu, flank steak and smoked turkey.

STARTERS

We tried a variety of options. A few fan favorites, but the majority were items we’d been eyeing on the menu prior to the visit. We started with the Quinoa Edamame Falafels and the Guacamame. I love falafels, they happen to be a staple at my house. My husband loves them. Typically the deep fried, Middle Eastern comfort food is made with chickpeas or fava beans, but at H.S. they consist of a combination of quinoa, edamame and chickpeas.

The “Guacamame” is house favorite for sure. I am not a fan of guacamole because it tends to be over salted and garlicky. This was very different. The edamame added that much needed “freshness” that guacamole tends to lack. It also left no traces of smelly garlic on my breath, which I am certain was welcomed by all at the table. The blue corn tortilla chips were yummy too.

ENTREES

There was no way that I was leaving without taking a trip down the salad bar. Though I will tell you, with all the options available, I am thankful they don’t charge by weight because I somehow always manage to request a little of everything on my salads. I ordered the Thai Grilled Shrimp Salad and boy was I pleased with that choice. The grilled shrimp were some of the largest I’ve seen and I am now addicted to kelp noodles. The salad also contains watercress, cilantro, jicama, mango, mint, red chilies, cashews, toasted sesame seeds with spicy Thai dressing. The dressing was so darn good. It was awesome to learn that Executive Chef Vanderpool makes all sauces, dressings, aiolis, salsas and dough, in house!

My dinner date ordered a pizza, of which are also customizable. The Truffle Infused Roasted Mushroom & Chicken pizza was amazing. The name alone contained too many words that made us salivate. We couldn’t resist.

DESSERT

The fun didn’t end with just the savory stuff, H.S. Green offers what I like to call “sweet tooth silencers,” desserts just sweet enough to get you fixed up and out the door. On a sad note I must share that I didn’t try them, mainly because {drum roll please} I don’t like chocolate! Their Nutella Pizza and Chocolate Tart were the only options available during my visit, but they have a special “Berry Pizza” topped with berry jam, fresh sliced strawberries, mint and fresh whipped cream that sounded as if it would have been my choice.

My dinner date and I opted for two of their delicious smoothies instead of a dessert, but prior too, confirmed that they did not contain milk. I am super lactose intolerant and that would have led to an instant tummy ache… and other stuff!

SMOOTHIES

We settled on the “Five Berry” and “The Protein” . The Protein smoothie consisted of chocolate whey, bananas, nutella, peanut butter and almond milk, I specifically ordered it because I was informed that it tasted like peanut butter. What I didn’t read was that it contained “whey protein”… well, Whey is the liquid remaining after milk has been curdled and strained. It wasn’t until about 10 minutes in did I realize that I made one of the worst mistakes of my life. My stomach was in knots and I really thought I was going to die, in my car, on the side of 59. Thankfully, I only blacked out a couple times. Although I didn’t die, it certainly smelled as if something had died in my vehicle!
